Louise McSharry has said she "couldn't believe it" when she found out she was expecting her first child and admitted she is "so lucky" to be pregnant.

The 2fm DJ, who is 24 weeks pregnant, is currently in remission after a brave cancer battle.

“I knew it was going to be difficult” she said, “I mean chemotherapy can be very difficult on your fertility," McSharry told Ray Darcy.

When asked how she felt when she took the test, she said she was in complete shock.

“I took the test here in RTÉ, I had taken them in work before and so I had two in my drawer, as you do, and so I said I’d take this test, and so I took it and it was positive”! she said.  “I’m so lucky; I keep clutching wood when I say that”.

As her baby was coming along, news broke to her about the health of her biological mother.

“The circle of life was put to me in black and white terms, because my biological mother, I got a phone call to say she was going to die in the next few hours, and I had just felt my baby kick for the first time, so it was a stark juxtaposition and made me really think of life, one thing goes and another thing starts," she said.

McSharry, who was on the show to talk about her upcoming book Fat Chance, said she made peace with her mother before she died.

“Just as I finished the book she was diagnosed with lung cancer, and she wasn’t going to last very long and I think it does make you let go of anything that’s not really important.

“In many ways she’s amazing but her impact on my life was not positive”.
