Britain's saucy end-of-pier Carry On comedy films are making a comeback after an almost 25 year absence.
The first instalment, Carry On Doctors, will be written by Susan Nickson and Tim Dawson - the duo behind the sitcom Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps.
The innuendo-laden franchise catapulted stars such as Barbara Windsor, Wendy Richard, Sid James and Kenneth Williams to fame in a series of hugely popular films in the 60s and 70s such as Carry On Camping and Carry On Up The Khyber.
The movies went on to become the longest-running film series ever in Britain.
The films, which are best remembered for its high camp performances and phrases, especially those of Williams including "Ooooh Matron" and "Infamy! Infamy! The all have it in for me!", will be the first time they have been produced since Carry On Columbus in 1992.
However fans of the series will have to make do without many of the regulars, some of whom of course have passed away.
Producer Jonathan Sothcott said the new series "isn't a remake or an attempt to reinvent the wheel", adding that "we won't be trying to find new Sids or Kenneths - we're looking to create a whole new ensemble of brilliant British comedic actors".
"No stunt casting. No big American stars. This will be British film at its best, as the truly remarkable heritage deserves."
The new movie's screenwriters said they were excited to help revive such a fondly remembered cinematic institution.
"These films are a part of British culture and to be carrying on the legacy of Norman Hudis and Talbot Rothwell is a thrill and a responsibility. We intend to be sympathetic to the heritage whilst being unafraid to modernise the franchise for a whole new audience. This is, literally, my dream job", said Tim Dawson.
His co-writer, Susan Nickson said she was "thrilled" to be involved in the franchise, having grown up with the series.
"I grew up watching these films and to be working on this project feels like coming home. They're peculiarly British but the appeal of the humour and the ever present message that good people always win is absolutely global."
Carry On Doctors is the first in a slate of new Carry On films being planned. A second instalment is set to be titled Carry On Campus.
Carry On Sergeant was the first film in the series, made back in 1958.
