Nicky Byrne may still be reeling from the disappointment of failing to qualify for this year's Eurovision Song Contest final, but there may be a silver lining with a potential presenter role on the X Factor spin off show - the Xtra Factor.

It's reported that he flew to London before his time at Eurovision for a screen test and impressed bosses at the ITV show.

The Mail on Sunday quoted a source which said that,  "A number of people are being considered the position and Nick is on the list. He has plenty of experience on camera and has a great profile in England which is a real plus".

The source added that: “It is all about the chemistry. If they find someone who works with him he has a real chance at landing the gig.”

Nicky of course would be well known to Simon Cowell, who signed Westlife to his label and steered them to worldwide success despite initial reservations that they were the "ugliest boy band in the world".

Byrne revealed on Friday that he was hugely disappointed over his failure to make the cut for the Eurovision final. However he said that he stood over the song and his performance and was not kicking himself that he could have done any better.

"I gave it my best shot... You can only do your best then after that it's up to everybody else to vote and put you into the final, which didn't happen", he said.

He paid tribute to all the people who had supported him and added: "I'm sorry if I let anyone down but we definitely gave it a good shot."

Nicky may have some competition for the role for some other Irish contenders. Laura Whitmore has also been was linked to Xtra Factor after hanging up her jungle boots, though its reported that ITV would have concerns about hiring two Irish presenters.

I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! winner Vicky Pattison has also been mentioned as another possible female presenter.

Meanwhile there are also reports that fellow 2FM DJ and Voice of Ireland presenter Eoghan McDermott and Darren Kennedy could both also be lined up a screen test, so the likelihood of an Irish presence on the show looks very strong.

Louis Walsh, who is returning as a judge on the X Factor panel, says he's hoping to find a Irish strong contender when the show returns to hold auditions in Croke Park in Dublin on July 1.

He revealed at the weekend to the Sunday World that, "I’ve signed a new contract. I’m back, I’m signed and I want an Irish act".
