Lady Gaga's representative has denied the singer will play Cilla Black in a new film based on the life of soul singer Dionne Warwick.

According to Variety, the singer's publicist said: "Lady Gaga is not attached and will not appear in the project.

"Reports of Gaga starring in the project are false."

Warwick herself, who is best known for hits such as Walk on By and Do You Know the Way to San Jose? reportedly broke the news that Gaga was to take on the role of Black - Warwick's 'musical nemesis' - at the Cannes Film Festival.

A serious rivalry between Warwick and Black began early in 1964 when Black beat her to number one in the UK with her cover of Anyone Who Had a Heart, which had been written for Warwick by Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

Speaking at Cannes, Warwick explained why the future Blind Date host - who passed away last year - was the baddie in the film, saying: "Because she stole my music!"

Set between 1962 and 1968, the film will follow Warwick's early singing career as she rose from obscurity to international stardom with a string of Bacharach and David songs.

Sheridan Smith previously starred as the Liverpool-born singer in the 2014 miniseries Cilla on ITV.

Meanwhile for a quick re-cap here's our Cilla's version of Anyone Who Had a Heart:
