Jack Reynor has reportedly lost out on winning the Han Solo role for the upcoming Disney Star Wars spin-off to Hail Caesar! star Alden Ehrenreich .

24-year-old Wicklow actor Reynor was first linked to the film late last year. In January he told MTV News that playing Han Solo would be "an incredible gig to get".

According to Deadline, Alden Ehrenreich, who starred in Hail, Caesar! and Blue Jasmine, is in final negotiations to play the young Solo in the upcoming Star Wars prequel - with an official announcement to be expected soon.

In December last year, The Hollywood Reporter revealed more than 2,500 actors had met for in-person auditions for the project, or submitted a tape.

At the time, the publication named Divergent's Ansel Elgort, Avengers star Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Harry Potter's Tom Felton and 21 Jump Street's Dave Franco among the young actors in the running for the coveted role.

Ehrenreich was rumoured to be a frontrunner in March, when Deadline reported he had been taking part in secret screen tests for the project alongside Reyor and Kingsman: The Secret Service star Taron Egerton.

The as-yet-untitled Star Wars spin-off, directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (writer/directors of The LEGO Movie and 21 Jump Street), will focus on a younger version of the interstellar smuggler in the days before he joined forces with the rebel alliance.

It is scheduled to hit cinemas on May 25, 2018.

Ehrenreich can next be seen alongside Jennifer Aniston and Toni Collette in Iraq War drama The Yellow Birds, which is scheduled for release later this year.
