Irish stars including Saoirse Ronan, Colin Farrell and Caitriona Balfe were out in their stylish best for Monday night's annual Met Gala.

The gala, which was held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, celebrated the opening of the Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology exhibit.

Tickets for the invitation-only event reportedly cost $30,000 dollars each or up to $275,000 dollars for a table.

Saoirse Ronan displayed her usual risk-taking style at this year's Met Gala wearing a custom Christopher Kane gown with a heavily feathered neck.

Taking to the red carpet, the Oscar nominated actress was eye-catching in an ivory column dress that featured a butterfly embellishment at the waist. The custom Christopher Kane design had a turtle-neck style to it, with the right shoulder and neckline adorned with white, pink and black feathers. The feathers also featured on the hem of the dress.

Keeping her hair slicked back, Saoirse's make-up look was more dramatic than usual with the star opting for a heavily lined eye.

Colin Farrell was joined by his sister Claudine at the event, which was co-hosted by Vogue editor Anna Wintour and Taylor Swift.

Farrell looked very dapper in a classic three-piece tuxedo and black suede shoes, while Claudine was beautiful in a heavily embellished black dress.

Outlander star Caitriona Balfe was also repping the Irish, wearing a red velvet Roland Mouret gown teamed Kurt Geiger pumps.

Balfe's look was a classic cut with a modern edge and the star's natural beauty shone through her minimalist make-up look. You can't beat a smoky eye!

The dress, while mostly burgundy on the front, was entirely black from behind and the drape detailing and lace straps made it something really special.

Eve Hewson looked absolutely incredible in a silver metallic, strapless Monse dress. The look was futuristic with a gothic edge thanks to her dark lip and sleek black hair.

Keeping her accessories elegant and simple, Hewson wore a fabulous Tiffany & Co. diamond necklace and a number of diamond rings on both hands.

The floor sweeping dress towed the line perfectly between timeless and edgy and the actress has shown again that she is one to watch in the style stakes.

A host of other international stars also walked the red carpet including Idris Elba, Madonna, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Zayn Malik and Rita Ora. However most of the talk was about Beyonce, who set tongues wagging after she arrived at the gala alone.

Wearing a latex gown by Givenchy, the singer has faced rumours of marriage problems with her husband Jay Z following the release of her new album Lemonade, which made several references to infidelity.
