Love/Hate actress Amy Shiels has told TEN that she still can't believe she is working with auteur David Lynch on the upcoming reboot of his classic series Twin Peaks, and that the show is still making her laugh through her terror.

The new series, for US cable network Showtime, picks up in Lynch's off-kilter Washington town 25 years on from the death of local beauty Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee).

Dubliner Shiels is one of a massive cast of over 200. No details of her role have been released; her casting was confirmed last week.

"I'm proud to be a part of such a cult classic TV show," she told TEN, describing Lynch as "one of the best directors and creators of art of our time".

Other Twin Peaks newcomers include Laura Dern (who starred in Lynch's 1986 film Blue Velvet), Naomi Watts (who starred in his 2001 film Mulholland Drive), Arrested Development star Michael Cera, Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder and Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor.

Returning Twin Peaks stars include Kyle MacLachlan (FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper), Sherilyn Fenn (femme fatale Audrey Horne), Miguel Ferrer (pathologist Albert Rosenfield), David Duchovny (transgender DEA agent Denise Bryson) and writer-director Lynch himself (Regional Bureau Chief Gordon Cole).

The award-winning series became one of the most talked-about television shows of the 1990s, noted for its ground-breaking narrative structure, surrealism and quirky characters.

Twin Peaks - Weird and groundbreaking

Shiels said that, like many viewers, the original series played havoc with her emotions. "Finding myself laughing through my terror was something I'd never experienced before," she recalled.

"Repeatedly, throughout the history of cinema and television, the directors who have found a unique niche invariably are the ones who last in our collective consciousness," she continued. "While I cannot talk about the current show at all, let me say that David Lynch is still making me laugh through my terror."

Shiels, who played Danielle in Love/Hate, moved to Los Angeles last year. Her other credits include Veronica Guerin, the acclaimed Irish chiller Citadel, Casualty and The Clinic. She is due back in Ireland in the autumn to shoot a new film.
