Country star and Liverpool native Nathan Carter debuted Liverpool, a new song which pays tribute in its lyrics to the 96 people who lost their lives in the Hillsborough disaster in 1989, on Friday night's Late Late Show.

Following a long legal battle, an inquest earlier this week returned a verdict of unlawful killing for all of the victims who tragically died at the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough Stadium, Sheffield on April 15 1989.

"I wrote that song 'round about six months ago with a good friend of mine, Nicky James, and his brother Joe," Carter explained. "It refers to the Beatles, George [Harrison] and John [Lennon], but it also mentions Hillsborough in the middle."

Before he became a star, Carter sang as part of a choir for five years at the annual Hillsborough memorial service.

"It was so touching this week when they got 'the result'," he added. "Thankfully, you just saw the relief on the families' faces, that they can eventually put the people to rest. It's gone on for so long."

Kevin Keegan, one of the many former Liverpool players who stood by the families of the Hillsborough victims as they fought for justice, also joined host Ryan Tubridy on the show.

"At the end of the day, justice was done, but it took a long time," he said. "Far too long."

"They fought an incredible campaign, the families," Keegan continued, "because this was 27 years."

The ex-England manager also spoke about his long career and reminisced about the night he appeared on The Late Late Show alongside an actual bear.
