It's been reported that police have confirmed that the singer, Prince, was found with prescription painkillers at the time of his death.
The 57-year-old music icon passed away at his Paisley Park home in Minnesota last Thursday. Reports state that he was found collapsed in a lift and was subsequently pronounced dead.
A post-mortem has been carried out on the deceased star but no cause of death has been confirmed.
TMZ reported that the singer overdosed on the painkiller Percocet five days before his death. It's been suggested that Prince was taking Percocet to counter the pain caused by a hip problem.
NBC News has now reported that police officials have confirmed that prescription painkillers were found in Prince's possession when he died as well as elsewhere in his home.
It is not known whether the drugs had any part in Prince's death, and the county sheriff investigating the death has apparently asked for assistance from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
Officials say the agency's role will be to determine such things as where the medications came from, and what prescriptions Prince had obtained. DEA agents often check those records in death investigations.
Prince's lawyer, L Londell McMillan, previously denied reports that the singer died of a drug overdose, insisting that he was "not on any drugs that would be any cause for concern."
"People use medication," he added. "The question is, are you on meds in a dangerous way?"
McMillan further noted that Prince, a vegan, was known for leading a clean lifestyle.
"Everybody who knows Prince knows he wasn't walking around drugged-up," he said. "That's foolish. No one ever saw Prince and said: 'He looks high'. It wasn't what he was about."
