Music icon Prince died without a will, according to his sister, Tyka Nelson, despite amassing a fortune estimated at upwards of $300m during his illustrious career.

According to court documents filed by Nelson yesterday in Minnesota, the 57-year-old singer died intestate.

"I do not know of the existence of a will," Nelson said in the documents laid before the court.

Nelson is the only full sibling of Prince, though he has five half-brothers and sisters who are also named as heirs. Prince was twice divorced and had no living parents or children. He had one child, Boy Gregory, with his first wife Mayte Garcia but he died days after his birth.

Under Minnesota state law it's likely that Prince's estate will go to his sister and other siblings. However in the absence of a will, it could get messy with competing claims over who is entitled to inherit his fortune. Nelson has now asked for a special administrator to be appointed to oversee the musician's estate

The claim that Prince died without having a will has caused considerable surprise, as he was not only a shrewd businessman but he also owned all of his recording and publishing copyrights.

While he's estimated fortune is huge, if anything it will only continue to grow as his record sales receive a massive boost following his sudden death last week.

Prince was found dead at his Paisley Park estate in Minneapolis last Thursday. However police say they are no indications that foul play was involved in his sudden death.
