Love/Hate star Brían F O'Byrne has joined the cast of US Civil War drama Mercy Street for its upcoming second season, and will play another law enforcer.
The Cavan actor, who played DI Mick Moynihan in Love/Hate, will play real-life Scotsman Allan Pinkerton, the head of the Union Intelligence Service, in Mercy Street.

Pinkerton, who founded the Pinkerton National Detective Agency, provided bodyguards to US President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War.
Mercy Street, which is shown on public service broadcaster PBS in the US, is currently in production in the state of Virginia. Among the directors for season two is actress Laura Innes, who played Dr Kerry Weaver in ER.

Along with directing episodes of ER, Innes has also been behind the lens on The West Wing, House, Brothers & Sisters, Grey's Anatomy and The Affair. She previously worked with O'Byrne on an episode of the US detective drama Prime Suspect.
O'Byrne, who is a Tony award-winner for his theatre work in the US, has numerous American TV shows to his name including The Bastard Executioner, The Last Ship and Flash Forward. His film credits include Jimmy's Hall, Brooklyn's Finest and Million Dollar Baby.
