Bruce Springsteen has paid tribute to Prince with a cover of Purple Rain.
Springsteen opened his show in Brooklyn's Barclays Center last Saturday night with a passionate rendition of the Prince classic with Nils Lofgren playing the distinctive guitar solo and the crowd singing along.
The Barclays Center was bathed in purple light as the Jersey rocker began the night, not with the usual The River Tour opener Meet Me in the City but with Purple Rain.
"Prince forever! God bless," Springsteen said at the conclusion of the song. There is no history of collaboration between both musicians but Prince's Purple Rain album and Springsteen's Born in the USA were released around the same time in the summer of 1984.
The Purple Rain performance marked the third time the E Street Band had cause to pay tribute to a music legend who died in 2016 with an onstage cover version. Already this year, there have been covers of David Bowie's Rebel Rebel and Glenn Frey's Eagles' hit Take It Easy, marking the passing of both performers.
Springsteen is due to play Dublin's Croke Park on May 27.
