Prince's remains have been cremated after a "private, beautiful ceremony" in which his family, friends and musicians said their goodbyes.

The star's representative Anna Meacham confirmed the news, saying in a statement: "A few hours ago, Prince was celebrated by a small group of his most beloved: family, friends and his musicians, in a private, beautiful ceremony to say a loving goodbye.

"Prince's remains have been cremated and their final storage will remain private. We ask for your blessings and prayers of comfort for his family and close friends at this time.

"The cause of death remains unknown and it will be at least four weeks before we receive the results of the autopsy. An announcement will be made at a future date for a musical celebration."

Among the people who attended the ceremony were percussionist Sheila E, bassist Larry Graham and Prince's sister Tyka Nelson.

The 57-year-old was found unconscious in a lift at his Paisley Park estate near Minneapolis on Thursday, April 21, where fans are still paying tribute.

Medical staff tried to revive the singer but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Midwest Medical Examiner's Office said there were no signs of suicide or foul play so far after Friday's autopsy, but an official cause of death could take weeks to determine.

Celebrity gossip website TMZ, which first reported the news of Prince's death, said he was briefly hospitalised in Illinois last week for a flu emergency and was forced to cancel two shows as a result of the illness. At the time a representative for Prince assured fans he was feeling much better and was resting at home.

Since the news of his death broke, tributes have been pouring in from heartbroken fans across the world.
