While Game of Thrones producers have ruled out the chance of spin-off series' following the show's conclusion, author George RR Martin has said there is "no lack of material" for prequels if HBO are interested in making them.

Martin has already written a series of novellas, Dunk & Egg, which are set 90 years before the events of the A Song of Ice and Fire book series, and tells the story of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg, who grows up to become King Aegon V Targaryen.

The author suggested that this series would be the perfect source material for a prequel to Game of Thrones saying, "The most natural follow-up would be an adaptation of my Dunk & Egg stories."

"There is certainly no lack of material," Martin told Entertainment Weekly. "Every episode of The Naked City – one of the television shows I watched as a kid – ended with a voice-over: 'There are eight million stories in The Naked City. This has been one of them'."

The Dunk & Egg series follows Daenerys' ancestor Aegon V Targaryen

"There are eight million stories in Westeros as well... and even more in Essos and the lands beyond. A while world full of stories, waiting to be told... If indeed HBO is interested," he added.

Game of Thrones returns in the US on April 24 with Sky Atlantic to simulcast the episode at 2am on April 25. The episode will then be repeated on Sky Atlantic later that Monday at 9pm.
