The Walking Dead star Lauren Cohan has said she "feels the pain" of the season six finale's cliffhanger but promises an "explosive" season seven that will give fans the answers they need.

Spoiler alert!

It's been almost two weeks since the feature length episode aired and fans were left wondering which of the lead cast was on the receiving end of Negan's gruesome baseball bat that he has so lovingly named Lucille.

After it was announced that Jeffrey Dean Morgan would be making his debut as Negan in the final episode of the season, fans were expecting a major character death, and while that does happen, we don't yet know who the victim was which has been met with mixed reviews.

Lauren Cohan, who plays Maggie on the hit AMC series, defended the cliffhanger saying it is in keeping with the show's tone, while acknowledging the hardship in not knowing what actually happened.

"I think the reaction is almost in keeping with the emotional peaks and troughs that the show takes us through," Cohan told E! News. "I'm really glad that the show is coming back with information. It's not like people are being left hanging and it's the end of the series or anything.

"So, I would say it's really a testament to people's dedication, but I feel like this is going to be the longest six months. I really do feel the pain of it."

The star also revealed that answers will be given straight away, which after the lengthy multi-episode fake-out of Glenn's death in the first half of the season comes as a relief.

"We'll definitely be having a big resolution when we come back, right off the bat, so that should be of some relief to people. But I know how painful the cliffhanger is," Cohan said.

Aside from finding out which of the cast will not be returning for the seventh run, Cohan teased the other elements that will make up the season, "We'll be exploring avenues and relationships that we haven't yet, but you'll definitely be taken on the roller coaster ride. I mean, the season comes back with a pretty intense, explosive start. That much I know."

The Walking Dead returns to AMC and Fox in October.
