Former Beatle Ringo Starr has joined the growing list of stars who've decided to cancel concerts in North Carolina in protest over the state’s anti-LGBT law.

In a statement Starr said that “I’m sorry to disappoint my fans in the area, but we need to take a stand against this hatred. Spread peace and love.”

He described the law known as HB2, or the 'bathroom law' as "bigotry" adding "How sad that they feel this group of people cannot be defended.”

The law bars transgender people from choosing bathrooms consistent with their gender identity, and it also blocks an expansion of the state’s current anti-discrimination law that was set to go into effect this month.

Last week Bruce Springsteen cancelled a gig that had been scheduled to take place in Greensboro, in order to “show solidarity” with people affected by the legislation known as HB2, or the “bathroom law.”

"Some things are more important than a rock show and this fight against prejudice and bigotry - which is happening as I write - is one of them," he said in an online statement.

Actress Sharon Stone yesterday announced that has cancelled filming of an upcoming project in Mississippi in protest against that State's new anti-'Religious Liberty' Bill, just days after Canadian singer, Bryan Adams also cancelled a concert in the State.

The new law will allow businesses and religious groups to refuse to serve LGBT people on religious grounds.

Best-selling Mississippi author John Grisham is one of 95 of the state's writers who signed a petition earlier this week calling for the law to be repealed.

Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, Pearl Jam and Cindy Lauper, all of whom have been vocal in their support of the LGBT community are due to play in the area soon, leading to speculation that they may also pull their concerts.
