Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch is voicing The Grinch in an all-new, 3-D animated movie.

At a Cinema-Con panel yesterday, American animation film production company Illumination revealed that it will release The Grinch that Stole Christmas this November.

Cumberbatch's green, Christmas-hating character will embark on a fiendish plot to ruin the Christmas holidays for the population of Whoville in the Peter Candeland-directed movie.

The much-loved author of children's books Dr Seuss created The Grinch for his 1957 book How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

Since then it has become a yuletide perennial, particularly in the USA, and has been adapted several times, most notably in 1966 by animation legend Chuck Jones, with horror movie veteran Boris Karloff providing the voice for The Grinch.

Jim Carrey played The Grinch in a live-action movie version of the tale that was released in 2000 and directed by Ron Howard.
