Things got serious on The Voice of Ireland on Sunday as the competition entered its closing stages with the final eight semi-finalists being chosen.

The public got get their chance to decide the fates of four of the remaining twelve contestants, while the remaining spot on each team was decided by each of the four coaches.

On Team Bressie Michael Lawson sang, Say You Love Me by Jessie Ware and many of the judges declared him to be a potential winner of the competition saying he was "the dark horse that has come out of nowhere" and was described as "vocally brilliant" .

Later Moylan Brunnock gave The Cure’s classic, Just Like Heaven an up to date makeover and was praised for turning "it into a song that works for Moylan". Belfast mum Georgina Richmond opted for with the floor-filler Sweet Lovin’ by Sigala though it wasn't enough to save her from being voted off.

Over on Team Rachel, Matheus Soares tackled You Don’t Own Me by Grace, while Ciaran O’Driscoll made his bid for a semi-final spot with the 80s classic, A-Ha's Take On Me.

Lastly, Laura O’Connor hoped to become the Dark Horse of the competition with the track by Katy Perry and was praised for her on stage look which she was told made her "like a goddess".

There was an eclectic mix on Una's team as well, with Emmie Reek singing Hush Hush by the Pussycat Dolls. which got a mixed response from the judges with Rachel telling her that "you are such a big presence on stage I felt you didn’t have the opportunity to show it with that song". 

Nigel Connell lent his set of pipes to Whitesnake's dandruff anthem, Here I Go Again and afterwards was described as "a true star" and told his performance was "incredible". 

Emmett Daly bravely took on Gavin James' Bitter Pill an effort which Bressie said  "paid off".

Finally on Kian’s team, Kelesa Mulcahy was hoping to follow in Fleur East’s footsteps with her take on the singer's debut single, Sax, Jasmine Kavanagh chose to sing Anytime You Need a Friend by Mariah Carey.

Busker Luke Ray Lacey hoped to follow last week's success with a rendition of Perfect by One Direction. There was some criticism of the song choice however Una said "it did showcase your voice".

After tonight's performances three of the candidates went through on a public vote were Nigel Connell on Team Una,  Matheus Soares on Team Rachel, Michael Lawson on Team Bressie while Kelesa Mulcahy was the public's choice from Team Bressie.

The remaining four chose by the judges were, Emmett Daly, Laura O’Connor, Moylan Brunnock and Jasmine Kavanagh.

So the eight semi-finalists are now chosen, with just two more weeks of the competition left to see who will be crowned The Voice of Ireland champion for 2016.
