Melissa McCarthy has confirmed that she'll be back playing chef Sookie St James on the Netflix revival of Gilmore Girls.

Ever since it was announced that the show was being given a reboot, there had been speculation about the possibility of McCarthy - who has become a superstar since the show first appeared in 2000 - joining the returning cast.

The main characters played Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel, were in from the outset. In recent times it appeared that McCarthy wouldn't feature, but she confirmed during an interview on today's Ellen show that she will be back as Sookie.

She told DeGeneres: "There has been something that I have been asked about so, so many times and it hasn't worked out and there is - they're making four new movies of the Gilmore Girls which is a show which was near and dear to my heart for four years and we could not get those schedules to work.

"And there was a whole thing. And then I was gonna be out of the country and blah, blah, blah. And literally about an hour and half ago we figured out that I'm gonna go back and do it and I am so excited. And they are gonna be amazing."

The show, which is tentatively titled Gilmore Girls: Seasons, will feature four 90-minute episodes.

Filming is expected to end in June, however a broadcast date has yet to be set.
