Sing Street star Lucy Boynton has joined the cast of the upcoming JD Salinger biopic Rebel in the Rye.

About a Boy and X-Men star Nicholas Hoult plays Salinger in the film which follows the author as he prepares to write his classic novel The Catcher in the Rye. There are no details on Boynton's character at present.

US industry website Deadline.com, which first reported English actress Boynton's casting, says that the film is written and directed by Empire co-creator Danny Strong.

It has been adapted from Kenneth Slawenski's biography JD Salinger: A Life. The cast also includes Kevin Spacey, Laura Dern, Ringer star Zoey Deutch and Spotlight's Brian D'Arcy James.

Following the Irish box office success of Sing Street, Boynton has two horror films due for release: The Blackcoat's Daughter and Don't Knock Twice.

Sing Street, which received its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah in January, opens in US cinemas next Friday, April 15. The John Carney-directed coming-of-age love story opens in the UK on Friday May 20.
