League of Ireland side Cabinteely faced unusual opposition last Monday when they played a friendly against British rock band Muse.

The trio were in Dublin ahead of Tuesday night’s sold-out show at the 3 Arena and their football-loving bass player Chris Wolstenholme fancied a game of ball and gave Cabo a call.

Managed by former Saint Patrick's Athletic midfielder Eddie Gormley, the club from Dublin's southside were happy to take up the challenge of playing against one of the world's biggest bands and their road crew.

Gormley told SunSport about Wolstenholme's connection with the club: "His young lad played with us about three years ago when Muse were over here making an album. That is where the contact came from.

"He is football mad and wanted a game. It is good publicity for the club. Any publicity is good publicity and it was an enjoyable occasion."

Cabinteely's 47-year-old boss played in the game, but admitted: "I'm bloody regretting it now! I haven’t been able to move for the last two days. I lasted the full 90 minutes."

Gormley didn't attend the Muse concert on Tuesday as he was too busy with his coaching duties at the First Division club. "We did get offered tickets but unfortunately I couldn't go," he said. "I was training the Under-13s and then the senior team."

Cabinteely's next game is the more mundane matter of Friday night's First Division fixture against Cobh Ramblers at Stradbrook.
