Miranda Hart is making a return to Call the Midwife for this year's Christmas special edition of the hugely popular BBC period drama.

But like the proverbial puppy, she isn't just for Christmas, the actress and comedian will also star in the show's sixth season in 2017, which is great news for fans of her character, Chummy.

Hart left her role as Camilla 'Chummy' Noakes, formerly Chummy Browne, in 2015 to star in the movie Spy, alongside Jason Statham and Jude Law.

Next year's run will apparently see the midwives leave the East End of London area of Poplar and travel to treat young babies in South Africa.

Makers of the show Neal Street Productions said, "We've been bursting to share the news Chummy has left the mother and baby unit and is heading back to Poplar for series six."

"We're thrilled to be once again featuring Miranda Hart and her fabulous blend of warmth, strength and vulnerability as Chummy gets to grips with the medical and social challenges of the 1960s."
