Kym Marsh has played the role of barmaid Michelle Connor in Coronation Street for almost a decade, but has revealed she almost quit this summer as her contract was about to expire.

'I thought about it for a long time," the 39-year-old actress told British newspaper The Sun on Sunday. "It was obviously a huge decision. My contract was expiring in June, and so the time to leave would have been now. Plus, of course, I didn't know if they wanted to keep me either."

Marsh also considered her future with the ITV show because her good friend and on-screen sister-in-law Alison King, who plays Carla, was departing the soap. Ultimately, the one-time Hear'say singer signed a one-year deal to continue in her role as Michelle.

Marsh is stepping out once again with personal trainer Matt Baker, now that the couple have resumed their romance after their 2013 split. After she joined the group Hear'say in 2000, she endured a battle with body image after being told she had "gotten fat". "I went from being very confident about my body to completely the opposite overnight and it stuck with me for years," she told MailOnline.

The actress released a fitness DVD, Power Sculpt, last December and has regained confidence in her body shape. "It's taken me many years to get to the stage where I can look in the mirror and be happy and proud of my body," she said. "There's no way I'd have done a bikini photo shoot a couple of years ago."
