Ka-pow! Batman v Superman takes Icarus-like dive

Have we finally reached peak superhero movie? Well, after setting Easter box office records with a global take of well over $400 million, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has plunged a none too superhuman 81% at cinemas worldwide.

Just one week after it was released, the superhero blockbuster to end all superhero blockbusters (well, hopefully) has had an Icarus-like fall from grace and set a new negative record for movies based on comic books.

According to Forbes, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which stars Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill, took $15.35 million in the US last Friday. That's an 81% drop from the same day the week before.

Here's what TEN's Sinéad Brennan made of the superhero ding dong.

Review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes awarded the movie a "rotten" rating, which means it is now the "highest-grossing, worst film" of all time but the idea that Batman v Superman was "critic proof" seems to have been demolished like a CGI skyscraper by the figures for the film's second weekend at the box office.

However, Forbes also reported that the film is on track to gross $1 billion worldwide. Not quite a full-flown turkey but not quite the zillion dollar result Warner Bros. and DC were hoping for.

Comic book film fans can console themselves with the fact that there are 35 superhero films set for release between now and 2020.
