Kiefer Sutherland has released his debut video for his country music song Not Enough Whiskey.

The 49-year-old actor, who is best known for playing Jack Bauer on the FOX drama 24, admits that while some people may be sceptical about his new career path, he wants to prove he is serious about his music.

"If I hear about an actor doing a music project, my eyes are the first to roll," he tells Rolling Stone. "It's been done before and, on some levels, not very well. A lot of actors make records but won't tour to support them or make videos, and it ends up not being serious. I felt strongly that this was something I wanted to do."

Sutherland says he can relate to the video, which was shot in a hotel room and a bar, and said that the message is personal to him.

"I've certainly been there, where something will happen in life, and one, two, three bottles of whiskey are not going to fix it," he says. "In the context of the song, those moments are important to realise so you have to find another way to deal with them. I'm sure a lot of people have felt that way."

Sutherland previously told the magazine his 11-track album is like a diary, "It's the closest thing I've ever had to a journal or diary," he said. "All of these songs are pulled from my own personal experiences. There is something very satisfying about being able to look back on my own life, good times and bad, and express those sentiments in music.

"As much as I have enjoyed the writing and recording process, I am experiencing great joy now being able to play these songs to a live audience, which was something I hadn't counted on."

Sutherland launched the independent record label Ironworks in 2002, with his close friend Jude Cole, and helped to distribute music by local musicians, before leaving the venture in 2009.
