Tim Roth and Samantha Morton are to star in new BBC true-crime drama Rillington Place.

The duo will lead the three-part series, which is based on the UK's notorious Notting Hill murders committed by John Christie in the 1940s and '50s, and the subsequent miscarriage of justice that led to the hanging of Timothy Evans.

Roth plays Christie and Morton his wife Ethel, and they are joined in the cast by Doctor Foster star Jodie Comer and My Mad Fat Diary's Nico Mirallegro as newlyweds Beryl and Timothy Evans.

Morton said: "I am very much looking forward to being part of Rillington Place with wonderful director Craig Viveiros in Glasgow, a city I love.

"And I am of course a huge fan of Tim Roth, so it's a thrill to be working alongside him."

Writers Ed Whitmore and Tracey Malone added: "This is a story you just can't look away from: an unlikely serial killer who orchestrated a devastating miscarriage of justice.

"It has drawn us in at every turn and has attracted an incredibly exciting level of talent who are as committed as we are to bringing it to life."

Filming has already started at BBC Scotland's Dumbarton Studios, and on location in Glasgow and London.
