Bridget & Eamon star Edwin Sammon has joined Republic of Telly.

The comedian is joining hosts Kevin McGahern and Joanne McNally for ten new episodes of the satirical RTÉ2 show.

The Offaly native, who just appeared as Father Gabriel in Bridget & Eamon alongside Republic of Telly alumni Jennifer Maguire and Bernard O'Shea, told TEN that he's "glad that it's finally been revealed" so he can officially talk to people about it.

He said his Bridget & Eamon co-stars Jennifer and Bernard haven't given him any tips for appearing on the show, but that Bernard has previously given him "good life tips", including "not punching anyone in the face", or "talking about anything shady from the past... all those skeletons in the closet".

Edwin has known host Kevin McGahern for years, and saw his first ever comedy gig, which made him "cry laughing", and says he's a good "sounding board" for potential sketches.

The stand-up comic says he's looking forward to bringing his "sense of humour" to the show, saying he wants to "make the news as funny as it can be".

He added that he's already written a few sketches for the show and has been "given free reign to come up with ideas", including spoofs of TV shows such as Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, a favourite show of his.

"I want to be myself within the parameters of the show", he said, "to push buttons, push the envelope".

Republic of Telly returns on RTÉ2 on Monday March 21 at 9.55pm.
