Jonathan Rhys Meyers has boarded the historical drama The Vikings, and is set to play a warrior.
The Irish actor is no stranger to period dramas, having played King Henry VIII in The Tudors, and is now set to get a bit more roughened up for his role in the saga exploring the Norseman of early Scandinavia.
The show has now been renewed by History for a fifth season consisting of a generous 20 episodes which are set to air in 2017. Production on the new season will begin this summer.
The Dublin-born star will reunite with Vikings' creator Michael Hirst, who previously worked with him on The Tudors for four seasons from 2007 - 2010.
History president Jana Bennett announced the casting news, saying: "The brilliant writing and depth of historical research and authenticity brought to the screen by Michael Hirst paired with our talented cast and crew, has made this series one of the most compelling, visually stunning historical dramas on television.
"Vikings has raided the hearts of audiences and we are thrilled that Jonathan Rhys Myers will become a bigger part of the History family after his incredible performance in our upcoming production of Roots."
