First Dates returns for its sixth series on Channel 4 tonight

First Dates is back on our screens for more tentative romance (Channel 4, 7pm), a new series Inside the GPO (RTÉ One, 7pm) goes behind the scenes of Ireland's iconic post office, while we're back in Newcastle for more shameless shenanigans on the new series of Geordie Shore (MTV, 10pm).

First Dates: 9pm, Channel 4

It's back for a sixth - yes sixth! - season tonight and once again wannabe daters will be hoping that cupid's arrow strikes in the restaurant under the watchful eye of Maitre'D Fred Sirieix. As we await the Irish incarnation later this year, we can expect plenty of toe-curling moments and hearts on sleeves. Tonight a burlesque dancer and a comic share their passion for performance, choirmaster Jay tells of coming out in the Muslim community and surviving a homophobic attack and Paolo and Gemma get off to a rocky start before a shared love of the music of Queen saves the day.

Inside the GPO, 7pm RTÉ One

The GPO has been at the heart of Irish life for 200 years and, as every Irish school-kid knows - this year certainly - it was the headquarters of the 1916 Rising. This series introduces us to some members of the 950 staff, folks like Philip Freer the patrol-man who is always on hand to help a customer, and to be a tour guide. Shay Cullen is the branch manager who wants the GPO to attain top of the league status in terms of post offices. Noel Carroll, superintendent in the GPO, has a great fondness for playing the fiddle and bringing music into the GPO. Stephen Ferguson is the custodian of archives and Wayne Smith is customer services representative, while Sue Gannon is the cleaner who takes pride in every shining surface.

Geordie Shore: 10pm MTV

When anthropologists analyse the decay in human civilisation in centuries to come, this might make a good starting point. And yet here we are for a mind-boggling twelfth season of the show that features the obligatory boozing, shagging, fighting all conducted under the veneer of fake tan and oiled pecs. There are two new cast members this year - Marty McKenna, who enjoys drinking and styling his hair; and Chantelle Connelly, who is feisty, loyal and opinionated. So nothing new there.
