Former Love/Hate star Ruth Negga has said viewers should expect extreme violence in her new series Preacher which debuts on US television in May.

The pilot episode of the comic book adaptation received its world premiere on Monday evening (Irish time), March 14 at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas where Negga was joined by co-stars Dominic Cooper and Joseph Gilgun and the show's executive producers, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Rogen and Goldberg also co-directed the pilot episode.

AMC, the cable network behind The Walking Dead franchise and Breaking Bad, will premiere Preacher in the US on Sunday May 22, directly after the mid-season finale of Fear the Walking Dead - a key schedule slot.

Based on writer Garth Ennis and illustrator Steve Dillon's cult comic of the same name, Preacher tells the story of Jesse Custer (Mamma Mia! star Cooper), a Texan preacher who becomes possessed by a supernatural creature.

Joining him on his adventures are his ex-girlfriend, criminal crack-shot Tulip O'Hare (Negga), and Irish vampire Cassidy (This is England star Gilgun).

The trio embark on a journey to find God and hold him accountable for "abandoning mankind".

Speaking to the audience after the South by Southwest screening, Negga said of her character: "She is so much fun [to play]... People don't think girls are capable of extreme violence."

Her co-star Gilgun added that the fight scenes in Preacher take "a couple of weeks" to film.
