Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder, who played the central roles in the original Beetlejuice, have signed up for the sequel.

Following years of rumour, director Tim Burton finally confirmed that both Ryder and Keaton will be back for the long-awaited follow-up, playing the parts of Lydia Deetz and Beetlejuice.

Beetlejuice 2 has been a subject of conjecture since 2011 with movie executives unsure whether Keaton would reprise his role of the playful spirit. Burton has confirmed that the actor has signed, with filming for the sequel set to begin in the near future.

Winona Ryder back on board for new Beetlejuice

Speaking to ShowbizSpy, Burton said: "The film is a go and has been approved by the Warner Bros team, we have talked with the cast members we wanted for the film and they are all on board, this includes both Winona and Michael. We have the script in hand everything is in place all we need to do now is get ready to start filming."

Burton directed the 1988 original, which starred Keaton as a so-called 'bio-exorcist' trying to scare away the new human inhabitants of a haunted house so that a ghost couple, played by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis, could continue living there.

Catherine O'Hara, Jeffrey Jones and a then 17-year-old Winona Ryder co-starred as the human family members who became targets of Beetlejuice.

A release date for Beetlejuice 2 has yet to be confirmed.
