Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin has issued a statement to say he is very much alive after fans of his work confused his name with that of the late Beatles' producer George Martin.

Confusion over the author's well-being was sparked after the death of the legendary record producer and musician was announced on Wednesday.

Many people mixed up the two individuals, with one Twitter user writing: "OMG George Martin is dead??! Game Of Thrones will never get an ending".

The 67-year-old author issued a statement paying tribute to "The Fifth Beatle", who died aged 90 on Tuesday.

"While it is strangely moving to realise that so many people around the world care so deeply about my life and death, I have to go with Mark Twain and insist that the rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated."

"It was Sir George Martin, of Beatles fame, who has passed away. Not me," he added.

Paying tribute to the Beatles producer, Martin (the Rs stand for Raymond and Richard) added: "He will be missed. I never met Sir George (I did meet Paul McCartney once, for about a minute, while waiting for the valet to bring my rental car up at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills), but like many millions of others, I loved the Beatles, and Martin's contribution to their music is worthy of recognition and honour."

"As for me, I am still here, still writing, still editing, still going to movies and reading books, and I expect to hang around for quite a while yet, thank you very much. But thank you all for caring."

Now, let's try and get final clarification on the fate of Jon Snow . . .
