Sinéad O'Connor has paid tribute to the late David Bowie by performing two of his classic hits at a fund-raising concert in Chicago.

O'Connor delivered poignant renditions of the late singer’s classics Life on Mars and Sorrow at the event, which was her first public appearance in four months.

The line-up also featured tribute band Sons of the Silent Age and Bowie’s former backup singer Ava Cherry.

Bowie died at the age of 69 after an 18-month battle with cancer and just a week after the release of his final album Blackstar. His status as one of the greatest pop icons of all time meant that news of his death was greeted with huge shock and disbelief by fans and fellow musicians with Bono tweeting that "Planet Earth is Blue" following his passing.

Bowie himself was no stranger to Ireland. He memorably played a surprise gig in Dublin's former landmark rock venue The Baggot Inn in 1991.

He also played intimate shows at The Waterfront and in The Factory rehearsal space near the Dublin docks and of course headlined Slane Castle in 1987 on his Glass Spider tour.
