Dublin’s Screen Cinema officially closed on Monday after more than 30 years in business.

Originally called The New Metropole, after the iconic cinema, ballroom and restaurant that once stood beside the GPO on O'Connell Street in Dublin, it opened in 1972 on the site of the old Regal cinema.

In 1984, it was renamed the Screen Cinema, which became the sister cinema to the Savoy Cinema on O'Connell Street. After this, the Screen showed more unusual, independent, and foreign language films, which attracted cult audiences.

The Screen hosted the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival since its inception in 2002, and in 2007 alone, 48 films were screened over the six days the venue was in use. Celebrity festival visitors have included Wim Wenders, Julie Walters, John Boorman, and Eduardo Noriega.

On the 19th February, it was announced that the Screen Cinema would be closing as a result of falling ticket sales. Staff will be transferred to the Savoy Cinema.
