Nicky Byrne has revealed that he once dreamed of becoming the lead singer of Westlife.
"Obviously Westlife was amazing, but I'm not going to lie - there were times were I wished I could have been centre stage," he admitted.
The 2fm DJ and former boyband star debuted his Eurovision single, Sunlight, on tonight's Ray D'Arcy show, and chatted to the presenter about his return to music.
"Music is in my family, I always knew I'd go back when the opportunity arose," he said.
He acknowledged that although there has been some backlash to the announcement that he would be representing Ireland at the Eurovision semi-finals in May, there hasn't been as much as he expected.
He said that the traditional format for choosing contestants clearly hasn't been working out for the nation, and we needed to shake things up.
"I might not be the answer, of course, but I think we need to do something different," he said.
Byrne told D'Arcy that he sent the single to his former manager Louis Walsh, who told him that he liked it, but it probably wouldn't win.
The fans in the studio audience, however, had the utmost confidence in Byrne, as did Sunlight co-writer Ronan Hardiman.
"We couldn't hope for a better ambassador for Ireland," said Hardiman. "I think we have one of the best chances."
