Matt LeBlanc has revealed that he barely "left his house" after sitcom Friends ended in 2004, adding that he felt "burnt out" after playing Joey Tribbiani,on the show for ten years.

"I was burnt out. I wanted to not have a schedule, not be somewhere. I was in a position to do that." he told the Mirror.

48-year-old LeBlanc, who recently signed up to present the new series of Top Gear, played Joey for a total of 230 episodes of the hit show, added: "My agent was bummed. Most actors call their agents and say, ‘What's going on?' I'd call mine and say, ‘Please lose my number for a few years.' It was a very dark time. I almost had a nervous breakdown."

Things got worse for LeBlanc when his marriage to model Melissa McKnight hit a rocky patch and his daughter, Marina, was diagnosed with cortical dysplasia, a condition that can affect the brain, bones and motor skills.

"My daughter was diagnosed with a problem with her head. It was a very dark period," LeBlanc said. "But I got through it. Don't they say what doesn't kill us makes us stronger?"

LeBlanc revealed that Marina, who is now 11, outgrew the condition and that they now go horseback riding and hiking together.

"Spending time with her is the best thing I've ever done," LeBlanc said. "We have a great bond and it's the best thing in my life."

LeBlanc was announced as the new co-host of Top Gear last week. "As a car nut and a massive fan of Top Gear, I'm honoured and excited to be a part of this iconic show's new chapter. What a thrill." he said.

"Matt's a lifelong fellow petrol head and I'm thrilled he's joining Top Gear," said Top Gear presenter Chris Evans. "Acting out our craziest car notions on screen is a dream job and I know we'll both be debating some epic road trip ideas. We can't wait to share what we've been up to on screen later this year."

LeBlanc appeared as a guest on Top Gear twice during the Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May era, and is the fastest celebrity to date in the show's Star in a Reasonably-Priced Car segment.
