The third programme in the 14th series features Jack Garratt, Otherkin, Low and in the IMRO Other Room, Saint Sister. Presented by Annie Mac, Huw Stephens and May Kay. Low travelled from the US to make their Other Voices debut, performing music from their album Ones and Sixes. Multi-instrumentalist Jack Garrratt was awarded the title of BBC Sound of 2016 - his thing is soulful vocals wedded to electronic sounds. Je t’aime: The story of French Song with Petula Clark, 11.45pm, BBC Four
"I want to make people cry even when they don't understand my words." - Edith Piaf.
Petula Clark, whose greatest hit was Downtown, is the iconic singer whom the French took to their hearts 60 years ago. In this well-deserved repeat, Petula explores the story of the lyric-driven French chanson and looks at some of the greatest artists and examples of the form. Guests include Charles Aznavour - a protégé of Edith Piaf - and Juliette Greco, whom Jean-Paul Sartre described as having 'a million poems in her voice.' Also on board are Anna Karina, darling of French Cinema's New Wave, muse of Jean-Luc Godard, and actress in many of his films. Also appearing are Jane Birkin, who had a global hit along with Serge Gainsbourg with the controversial Je t'aime (Mai non plus). Marc Almond has received great acclaim with his recordings of Jacques Brel songs and he also contributes. Contemporary French composition is not overlooked either, in the shape of new lyrical forms exemplified by current artists such as Stromae, Zaz, Têtes Raides and Etienne Daho.
