Tom Cruise is one step closer to going back into the danger zone in the long-awaited sequel to Top Gun following a meeting with producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
Bruckheimer, who produced the original 1986 box office hit, recently travelled to New Orleans to meet Cruise. The actor is in the city to film the new Jack Reacher thriller, Never Go Back. It was Cruise's role as fighter pilot Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell in Top Gun that propelled him to superstar status.
Writing on Twitter, Bruckheimer said: "Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend @TomCruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2."
A source told US entertainment industry website Deadline.com that the sequel was "closer now to becoming real than it's been in 30 years."

The project lost momentum following the death of original director Tony Scott in 2012.
But speaking at a production conference the following year, Bruckheimer said: "For 30 years we've been trying to make a sequel and we're not going to stop. We still want to do it with Tom and Paramount are still interested in making it. "What Tom tells me is that no matter where he goes in the world, people refer to him as 'Maverick'. It's something he is excited about so as long as he keeps his enthusiasm hopefully we'll get it made."
Last summer it was reported that the latest script for the film focussed on drone warfare.
