The family of singer-songwriter Colin Vearncombe, known as Black, have said that his condition has deteriorated following a car crash in Cork earlier this month.

The 53-year-old Liverpudlian, best known for his 1987 hit Wonderful Life, is in a medically induced coma in Cork University Hospital. He was travelling from his home in Schull, West Cork to Cork Airport on Sunday January 10 when the crash took place.

Last week Black's family asked fans to send him "collective healing and positive energy" with his management saying that "a miracle" was needed as they awaited another scan on the Friday morning.

In the latest update posted online on behalf of the family on Sunday night, Black's management said: "Following Colin's scan on Friday, the news is not encouraging. His condition has seriously deteriorated.

"We acknowledge the grief among all those who love him and are deeply grateful for the thousands of messages of love and support however there will be no more news updates while his family remain at his bedside."

"As before, we request that they are given space to deal with this most difficult of situations," concluded the update.

Black has lived in Ireland for over a decade. Along with releasing more than a dozen albums, he has also published poetry and staged exhibitions of his art in Ireland. He is due to become a grandfather on St Patrick's Day.
