One Direction star Liam Payne has categorically denied that the boyband's hiatus is to turn into a permanent split.

Last August the British boy band announced that they would be taking a break for 12 months from March 2016. That break has since been extended to 18 months, and now US Weekly reports that a "source close to the boy band" claims it's final.

The source also claims that the Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles and Liam Payne did "not renew their recording contract" after their tour finished last October.

"The 1D thing just ran its course," the source stated.  "They'll remain friends, but they are exhausted and want solo careers."

However, Payne has since spoken to photographers at Los Angeles airport and insisted that One D are definitely not splitting for good.

He said, "No, no, no, no, no. We just got nominated for two BRIT awards," when asked out straight if they had come to an end completely.

Payne also addressed reports that things had turned sour between the band and former member Zayn Malik.

"He's just doing his thing, he's fine.  I spoke to him recently. It would be a big thing if he came back."

He added: "Of course I love Zayn, he's great."

When asked if they would ever consider replacing Malik, Payne did not think this was such a good idea.

"No, there are enough people to deal with, we don't need any more people!"
