The shortlist for the upcoming Star Wars spin-off movie that will focus on the early life of Han Solo has been revealed, and our very own Jack Reynor is in the running.

The spin-off movie is slated for release in 2018 and is being helmed by The Lego Movie's Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

Hollywood insider publication Variety has revealed the shortlist of stars being considered by Disney and Lucasfilm to take on the iconic role, made famous by Harrison Ford in the Star Wars series, and Dubliner Jack Reynor is one of the dozen or so names being bandied about.

Harrison Ford as Han Solo

After seeing thousands of actors, studio executives are now working from a much shorter list and it is full of established stars and exciting up-and-comers. It is expected that they will make their final decision in the next couple of weeks.

Aside from Transformers' Reynor, The Fault In Our Stars' Ansel Elgort is also in contention, as is Brooklyn's Emory Cohen, Whiplash star Miles Teller and Scott Eastwood (yes, Clint's son).

Bad Neighbours and 21 Jump Street's Dave Franco, Fury's Logan Lerman and Everybody Wants Some's star Blake Jenner also hold places on the list.

Scott Eastwood

29-year-old Eastwood is the oldest actor on the list, with the others all in the 20-25 year old age group. The studio is said to have tested stars from 17-34 years in the hopes of finding the perfect Han Solo.

The film will begin shooting in January but it is rumoured that the chosen actor will have a small cameo in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the first film in the Star Wars: Anthology series, which will see a number of standalone stories being told within the Star Wars universe. Rogue One, which will be set between the events of Episode III and Episode IV, is currently shooting, with a month of filming still to go.

Aaron Paul

Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul hinted in July 2015 that he might be joining the Star Wars universe as details of the Han Solo spin-off movie were originally released.

Paul shared a picture of the Star Wars official Twitter profile to his Instagram account with the caption: "My dreams are coming true" which got fans excited at the prospect of Jesse Pinkman heading for a galaxy far, far away.

The 36-year-old actor may not be in contention for the lead role, but perhaps a smaller one is in his sights? Or we all read too much into an Instagram post, it wouldn't be the first time.
