Ricky Gervais played a blinder as the host of the 2016 Golden Globes - and the famously outspoken star flitted between hilarity and outright crassness during the show. Here are some of his funniest quotes, well the ones we can print anyway...
The comedy legend pulled no punches as he returned to the hosting duties for the fourth time, taking the reins from three-time hosting duo Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, surely leaving the array of A-listers quaking in their seats for fear of being on the receiving end of his sharp-tongued wit.
His diatribe against Hollywood added an enjoyable irreverence to the proceedings, no more so than when he said: “You’re filth, all of you,” as the feed came back unexpectedly.
An awful on-stage encounter with Mel Gibson was less well received, especially by Gibson himself, but in general Gervais had the crowd laughing along, if from behind their fingers for fear of being picked on next.
Here are some Gervais' best lines - well what's printable:
"I'm going to do this monologue and then go into hiding – not even Sean Penn will find me."
"You're global mega stars with amazing talent. Most of you. A few of you married well. You know who you are. We all do."
"If you do win tonight, remember: no one cares about that award as much as you do. Don't get emotional; it's embarrassing. No one cares about that award as much as you do."
"The Golden Globes doesn't have an in memoriam section to get you all depressed. Instead, we let the President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association say a few words."
"Our next presenter is the star of the hilarious comedy The Martian. Oh, I nearly died..."
"Eva Longoria and America Ferrera aren't just beautiful, talented actresses. They're also two people that your future president, Donald Trump, can't wait to deport."
"This show is way too long..."
"Our next presenter is the most respected actor in the room. That isn't saying much."
And the Best Quotes from the Red Carpet:
Ricky Gervais on being host: "I'm looking forward to it being over... I'll have a blast... But before you know it you are backstage getting drunk in your pants."
Mark Ruffalo on chasing his Globe-nominated role in Infinitely Polar Bear: "It's not in my nature to chase too much – unless it's my wife."
Sylvester Stallone on coming to his first Golden Globes back in 1977 for Rocky and how the ceremony has changed: "I actually had a hard time getting in because of the tumbleweed."
Steve Carell on not knowing the financial terms in the Globe-nominated The Big Short: "I would never admit such a thing. I knew everything!"
