There was no luck for Irish acting nominees Saoirse Ronan, Michael Fassbender and Caitriona Balfe at the Golden Globes in the US on Sunday night, but Brie Larson won Best Actress for her performance in the Irish co-production Room.

Brie Larson thanked Room's director, Dubliner Lenny Abrahamson, and Irish producer Ed Guiney during her acceptance speech.

Carlow actress Saoirse Ronan had been nominated in the Best Actress category for her role in Brooklyn.

Room's author Emma Donoghue had been nominated for Best Screenplay but lost out to Aaron Sorkin for Steve Jobs. Room had also been nominated for Best Picture.

There was disappointment for Steve Jobs star Michael Fassbender in the Best Actor category, with Leonardo DiCaprio winning for The Revenant. It was DiCaprio's third Golden Globe win and the third time Fassbender had been nominated.

DiCaprio's win was one of three for The Revenant: it was also named Best Motion Picture, Drama and Alejandro González Iñárritu won Best Director.

Kate Winslet won the first award of the night: Best Supporting Actress for Steve Jobs. In her acceptance speech she described co-star Michael Fassbender as "a legend" and "an amazing colleague and friend".

Thirty-nine years after his last Golden Globe acting nomination, Sylvester Stallone was named Best Supporting Actor for his performance as his iconic creation Rocky Balboa in Creed. He received a standing ovation and paid tribute to his family's love as "the greatest award in the world".

As expected, there was a Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical double for The Martian: Best Film and Best Actor for Matt Damon.

Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for Joy. It was Lawrence's third Golden Globe in four years and they have all come when working with director David O Russell.

All eyes in the movie industry now turn to the Oscar nominations, which will be announced at lunchtime this Thursday.

The award for Best TV Series, Drama went to Mr Robot. It was one of two wins for the hacking thriller on the night - star Christian Slater won Best Supporting Actor in the TV categories.
