Emma Stone is in talks to take on the role of Cruella de Vil in a live-action origins story about the 101 Dalmatians villain.
Glenn Close brought the character to life in the 1996 live-action remake of the classic 1961 animated feature, and also starred in 2000's 102 Dalmatians.
According to US trade publication The Hollywood Reporter, Stone, who earned an Academy Award nomination last year for her role in Birdman, is in early negotiations to play the title character in Cruella.
The project is currently without a director but it is said to be a priority for Disney, with plans for filming to begin later this year.
Kelly Marcel, who previously wrote Saving Mr Banks and the Fifty Shades of Grey screenplay, will pen the script for the origins tale.
Aline Brosh McKenna, the writer behind The Devil Wears Prada and 2014's Annie remake, worked on an early version of the script.
