Box office records smashed in 2015

Global box office records were smashed in 2015, with over $38 billion (€35 billion) being taken in worldwide.

Chris Pratt's Jurassic World was the top-earning film in the record-breaking year, with the latest instalment of the Fast & Furious franchise, Furious 7, following in second place.

The Marvel superhero-movie Avengers: Age Of Ultron was the third highest-earning film of the year, while JJ Abrams' highly anticipated and critically lauded Star Wars: The Force Awakens came in fourth. Animated comedy film Minions rounded off the top five.

Other notable box office giants from the year were Spectre, the latest James Bond adventure, Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation, The Hunger Games Mockinjay, Part 2, The Marian and San Andreas.

The statistics were announced by Rentrak, who said of the record-breaking year: "This global record proves that going to the movies is a beloved pastime that is enjoyed throughout the world, with moviegoers from a wide array of backgrounds and cultures all coming together for the shared in-theatre experience."
