American actor Wayne Rogers, best known for playing Captain 'Trapper' John McIntyre on the hugely successful TV show M*A*S*H, has died.

The 82-year-old passed away on New Year's Eve after suffering complications from pneumonia.

Following a series of minor roles and starring in the short-lived cowboy show Stagecoach West, Rogers was cast as Trapper John on the CBS adaptation of M*A*S*H, taking the role played by Elliott Gould in the 1970 film.

Despite the show's success, Rogers departed after three seasons and went on to star in NBC’s detective drama City of Angels and the CBS sitcom House Calls.

His other TV acting credits include Murder, She Wrote, The Larry Sanders Show and Diagnosis Murder. He also did some producing, writing and, as a successful investment strategist, served as a panelist on Fox News’ Cashin’ In business analysis program.

Rogers is survived by his wife Amy, two children from a previous marriage and four grandchildren.
