The evacuation of Dunkirk in June 1940 saw nearly 340,000 British troops escaping from the beaches of Northern France where they suffered heavy casualties from the advancing German army.
A recreation of the evacuation was one of the set pieces of Joe Wright's 2007 adaptation of Ian McEwan's novel Atonement.
