Alicia Vikander, who stars opposite Eddie Redmayne in the new gender reassignment period drama The Danish Girl, has said that making the movie was an emotional and intense experience.

The film, which was directed by Tom Hooper, who made the acclaimed The King's Speech, tells the true story of Danish artist Einar/Lili Elbe, one of the first known recipients of gender confirmation surgery.

It stars Redmayne as Elbe and Vikander as the artist's wife and fellow painter Gerda Wegener and it hits Irish cinemas this Wednesday, December 30.

Speaking to TEN, the Swedish actress said: "Making the movie was both emotional and nerve-wracking and yes, it was an intense shoot and we had so little time but I really felt for this role. I felt so fortunate to be invited to be part of telling it.

"I love to act so to be given that kind of range of a journey and those emotions to discover and explore is a wonderful thing, I think, for any actor."
