Cate Blanchett is to step back from work in 2016 to take care of her adopted baby daughter.
Blanchett - who has won much praise for her role in the Todd Haynes' film Carol - adopted baby Edith in February and the actress has told Harper’s Bazaar that she feels like a first-time mother all over again. She already has three older biological sons, Dashiell, 14, Roman, 11, and eight-year old Ignatius.
“We got a phone call earlier this year and we adopted a little girl,” she told the magazine, speaking for herself and husband Andrew Upton. “You’re on the list and then you get the call. You don’t know anything about the child you’re going to meet.”
Being an experienced parent only helped to a degree: “It’s always the first time,“ said the actress. “Always.” She said that she was “not planning on working much in 2016 either.”

“Our three biological children have been extraordinary. It’s been wonderful watching them become a little brood.”
Speaking about adoption laws, Blanchett believes the world must now prepare for a new wave of orphans from Syria.
“The laws have to shift towards the best interests of the children. Otherwise what happens is these children end up being shunted back and forth through the foster system, and ultimately if that goes on until the child is five or seven, then the damage is just . . . ”
She also referred to the Syrian crisis in the Harper's interview: “We’re going to see a new wave of orphans coming out of the Syrian crisis and Europe, and the rest of the world is going to have to respond. It’s a world issue.”
