EastEnders fans have been promised a cliffhanger when Mick and Linda's wedding descends into chaos during the soap's New Year's Day episodes.

The soap has already served up its share of shocks this Christmas with the death of Arthur 'Fatboy' Chubb in a case of mistaken identity, youngster Denny needing brain surgery to stop a bleed and Ian deciding to take the blame for Phil's car crash.

Now the production team says the Carter family will be plunged into "mortal danger" when Linda's rapist Dean (played by actor Matt Di Angelo) gatecrashes the wedding.

Dean and brother Mick (Danny Dyer) end up fighting in a lake, with newly released photos showing Linda (Kellie Bright) and the rest of the family looking on in horror.

Actor Dyer has said he almost drowned while filming the stunt. "We went to Pinewood and we did it properly and I've got to say some of that stuff under the water, I was actually fighting for my life in real life. I couldn't quite find the surface," he recounted at a recent press event.

Who will survive?

Dyear described his fight scenes with co-star Di Angelo as "an epic battle". You can watch the action unfold at 6:25pm and 8pm on RTÉ One on New Year's Day.
